Nu Instruments are extremely proud to announce that our chairman and co-founder, Dr Phil Freedman, has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2016, for Services to the Scientific Instrumentation Industry and to the Economy in Wales.
Phil’s incredible technical and scientific prowess has driven forward the growth of Nu Instruments, which began in a single room in an industrial unit in Wrexham, and has since grown to be an internationally renowned company with instruments in prestigious academic institutions around the world.
The company was formed when Phil was asked to develop a multi-collector ICP-MS, as the products commercially available at the time did not meet the high standards of reliability, flexibility and ease of use required by some researchers in the field. As Phil had been jointly responsible for the development of ICP-MS technology he was well placed to design new features which allowed these requirements to be met. Zoom optics, which removed the need for moveable collectors, were incorporated into the Nu Plasma, and a new generation of instruments was born.
The Nu Plasma has gone on to become the market leading product in multi-collector ICP-MS, and Nu have just released the third generation Plasma 3. The company’s instrument portfolio has simultaneously expanded to incorporate High Resolution ICP-MS, Stable Isotope Ratio MS, GD-MS, TIMS and Noble gas instruments.
The growth of Nu Instruments’ products has always been driven by collaborations with academic researchers who wish to push the boundaries of instrumentation specifications, and Phil’s ability is regarded highly by researchers and colleagues alike. This growth has brought increased employment and huge financial investment to Wales and helped put Wrexham on the map in terms of scientific innovation.
Phil feels extremely honoured to have received this award, which reflects the cutting edge technology provided by Nu Instruments and the innovative nature of our collaborations. Phil is proud of the public recognition of his contribution to science and the impact it has had on the Welsh economy.
